Friends of the Library group consist of people who care about libraries and are interested in promoting the welfare and growth of the Library. The County of Los Angeles Public Library currently has 77 Friends of the Library groups with a total membership of over 5,523. Friends of the Library members join together to:

• promote goodwill and support for the Library
• stimulate public awareness of Library needs
• seek out sources of cultural and educational programs for the Library

To support the Library, Friends groups undertake activities such as:

• assist with Library programs (sponsoring events, providing refreshments, etc.)
• recruiting volunteers and serving as volunteers
• holding fundraising events (book sales, golf tournaments, etc.)
• supporting legislative action on behalf of the Library

Demand for Library services rise as communities grow and change. These demands far exceed funds normally available for Library operation. The Library's responsibility in meeting the complex needs of the community requires active support by the community in carrying out its multi-faceted educational, cultural and recreational role.

Friends of the Library groups are self-organized and supporting. They hold meetings, governed by a constitution/ by-laws, elect officers, organize working committees, print newsletters and maintain their financial records. Membership is open to anyone interested in helping to enhance public library service in the community. The Community Library Manager working closely with the group as an ex-officio member.

Each group is encouraged to join the Friends of the Library USA (FOLUSA).

Local Friends are invited to share successful ideas and common interests each year at the County of Los Angeles Public Library Friends Exchange.
