History
The first Canyon Country Library opened on September 20, 1971 at 18536 Soledad Canyon Road and was the second permanent library facility operated by the County Public Library in the Santa Clarita Valley. At that time, Canyon Country Library replaced the Saugus Mobilibrary. The Mobilibrary was a cooperative venture between the Saugus Union Elementary District and the County Public Library. The 5,050 square-foot building was originally leased from Pierpont Warehouses Corporation, and in 1985, was purchased by the County Library. On November 17, 2001 the library was renamed the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library moving to a brand new 17,000 square foot facility (utilizing 12,864 square feet) at 18601 Soledad Canyon Road.

Collection
The original collection of 20,000 volumes has now expanded to over 102,640 books; 89 newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and audiovisual collection with 7,470 audio recordings including books-on-tape, and 7,692 video recordings including DVDs. The library also has telephone books from most geographic areas in California; pamphlets; and a local history collection.

Services
Services available to customers include 6 Online Public Access Catalogs; 10 Public Access Internet Workstations; 4 Homework Center CD-ROM/Internet Workstations; and a coin-operated photocopier. The library also offers children's programs for a variety of age groups, including:

  • Babytime: Babytime is on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and is a special storytime program for babies ages 6 months to 18 months, and their parent or caregiver.

  • Toddler Storytime: Toddler Storytime is held Wednesday mornings at 10:15 & 11:15 a.m. and is designed as an introduction to the Storytime experience. It is a Mommy/Daddy and Me Program requiring the participation of both parent and child. The program stresses the development of reading readiness and language skills through the use of nursery rhymes, finger plays, songs, and body movements as well as books.

  • Preschool Storytime: Preschool Storytime is held on Tuesday mornings at 10:15 & 11:15 a.m. and is for 3-5 year olds. The goal of the Storytime program is to provide children with an enjoyable library experience based on books and language. The program has been designed to include a variety of stories, songs, finger plays and crafts appropriate for preschool age children.

  • Homework Center:  The Homework Center is specifically designed to satisfy homework assignments from the local schools. The Homework Center has been upgraded with a $21,500.00 grant from Pacific Bell and received a donation of four CD-ROM/Internet Workstations from the Friends of the Libraries of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Facilities
The library utilizes 12,864 square feet of the 17,000 square foot facility. 4,136 square feet have been leased to College of the Canyons by the City of Santa Clarita. The library features a separate children' area with Homework Center; a periodical lounge reading area; and a special young adult area. It also has a two-person reference desk; a circulation desk with four check-out stations; a copy center; a Friends of the Library Bookstore; and a meeting room with a capacity of 157.
