County of Los Angeles Public Library
Reading Program Information

Parents:

Your local County of Los Angeles Public Library offers Reading Programs to encourage children to use the library all year. We would like children to read independently and for fun. Reading throughout the year helps children develop and enhance their reading skills. We also hope children will form a lifelong reading habit.

Children are encouraged to come to the library anytime to browse and discover our variety of materials including books, magazines, and records. Experts are available to help your child select materials that will be of interest to him or her.

The reading programs at your library include free scheduled activities such as films, storytimes, crafts, and speakers for children. Children of all ages are invited to participate.

As additional motivation, folders are provided for the children. Children of all ages are invited to participate.

As additional motivation, folders are provided for the children to keep track of the books they read. The library tries to provide a non-competitive atmosphere for children where they can share their reading discoveries with others. All children participating in this aspect of the programs will receive certificates regardless of the number of books read.

The reading programs last throughout the year. Children may join their library's activities anytime. Check with your local library for dates and times of specific activities.

Nine Tips to Better Reading

Educators agree that children who read in the home have a head start in school. What can you do to encourage your children's reading?

  1. Visit the library regularly with your children.

  2. Help your children locate materials in their areas of interest.

  3. Discover some of the quality children's magazines at the library.

  4. Use the children's literature experts in the library to recommend books for your children.

  5. Discuss their selections with them.

  6. Read aloud at home. No child is too old or too young to enjoy this family activity.

  7. Let your children see you reading.

  8. See that your children have a quiet, comfortable place to read.

  9. Ask about extended loans for vacation time.

Your whole family can research hobbies, plan a vacation, learn a new language, learn a new game or skill at the library.
